Batman Day 2023: Must Reads
Batman Day is just around the corner! They say there's a holiday for everything and our favorite heroes are no exception. The brooding knight is gearing up to celebrate his own holiday for the 9th year in a row this month. The global holiday is celebrated on the third Saturday in September, which happens to land on September 16 this year. Since his debut in 1939, Batman has become a staple in pop culture, and has curated timeless stories that have captivated comic fans and non-fans alike.
A Brief History of Batman
Batman first debuted in Detective Comics #27 in 1939. He was originally created by Bob Kane and further developed by Bill Finger. The duo was inspired by Zorro, Sherlock Holmes, a sketch by Leonardo Da Vinci, a movie called The Bat, and of course, Dracula.
After a year of solo adventures, Robin was introduced as a sidekick to Batman in 1940 and has remained a constant in the Batman mythos since then. Almost immediately after, even more iconic characters, mostly villains like The Joker and Catwoman, were introduced as well.
Despite his growing popularity, the first Batman Day wasn't until the 75th Anniversary of Batman's first appearance, July 23, 2014. This day was picked to coincide with the San Diego Comic-Con, however subsequent days have been held in September.
It has been observed that the difference of popularity between this day and other relevant superhero days, like for Superman or Wonder Woman, is in part due to the relatability of Batman having no powers of his own. Despite being at an obvious disadvantage with the rest of the hero world, Batman continues to prevail using bravery and pure atheleticism.
