Fleeing Louisiana into Alabama with her dad's bank robbery cash in pocket, Dixie's family tries to settle down again and make a fresh start. Her Dad's impulses, however, make him incapable of holding onto the money, from generous donations to gambling. Worse yet, he gets robbed... by none other than a crooked cop! Penniless again, Dixie's mother gets another ill-paying usury job that questions one's ability to stay honest, and her dad is compelled to run the same cycle over once more. And then there's that mysterious private investigator closing in on them. Also, Dixie runs into author James Agee and photographer Walker Evans, who chronicled the Depression and the plight of tenant farmers in the South, and a bit of history is made...
